KS3/4 Boccia

On Wednesday 24th the first of a series of KS3 & KS4 Boccia tournaments took place at Franklin College. The event was well attended with 19 teams from 6 schools in attendance from Humberston Academy, Oasis Academy Wintringham, Healing, Tollbar, Havelock and Oasis Academy Immingham.

Boccia is a precision sport, related to boules for people with disability or special educational needs. The competition involved teams of three with up to six players on court at any one time. The aim is to score as many points as possible by players aiming to place their set of coloured balls closest to the white jack. A game consists of 2 ends (an end consists of 6 balls per team) and the team with the highest number of points after the two ends win.

The teams were split over 4 groups to begin the tournament with the chance to progress into the quarter finals if they finished either 1st or second in their group.

Each group was highly competitive with every team managing to win or draw one or more of their matches and as the final group games were completed only point’s difference was enough to separate the teams and confirm the final standings. Teams progressing into the quarter finals were as follows; Oasis Academy Immingham, Tollbar A and C, Humberston A and B, Havelock A, Oasis Wintringham A and Healing A.

The quarter finals were as closely contested as the group stages with each team knowing that a place in the semi-finals would guarantee them a place at the Level 3 tournament in Hull on July 15th. Congratulations to Oasis Academy Immingham, Humberston A, Healing A and Tollbar C for achieving this.

These 4 teams battled hard in their semi-finals continuing to show excellent skill and team work throughout. Congratulations to Humberston A and Healing A, who finished 3rd and 4th respectively.

The final was between Tollbar A and Oasis Academy Immingham. Both teams had only lost one match on route to the final and Immingham had already managed to improve on their 4th place finish at the last Boccia tournament but was Tollbar who emerged champions with a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Event organiser, Nick Hanson said, ‘The tournament was a huge success with the pupils participating a huge credit to their school. Boccia allows children who otherwise wouldn’t get the opportunity to play with or against each other competing on a level playing field. We are keen for children in North East Lincolnshire to get the chance to play new and non-traditional sports.’ HeH

A special mention to the volunteers from Franklin College who helped support and officiate the event.
