Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Tournament

The North East Lincolnshire School Sports Partnership Y5/6 Tag Rugby tournament took place on Wednesday 11th March at Grimsby RUFC. The event was extremely well attended with 19 teams from 16 different school competing on the day.

The tournament was split down into 4 groups where each team battled to top their group and progress to the semi-final stages. Once all the teams had arrived and been briefed the first round of group matches got under way.

Great Coates got off to a flying start scoring 6 tries against Humberston C of E and the high scoring continued across the other group matches with both Lisle Marsden and Elliston scoring 5 tries. The first match in group 3 finished with just one point in it with Scartho edging to a 4-3 victory over Signhills.

The high standard continued thoughout the group stages and the enthusiasm and competitive spirit from all the schools involved also remained making it a great competition for both spectators and players.

The group games came right down to the wire with all of them finishing with just 1 point between first and second place! From Group 1 winners Healing A faced Humberston C of E A in the first semi-final and an unbeaten Scartho team playing Reynolds in the second.

Healing cruised to a 6-0 victory having conceded only 5 tries across the whole tournament while the match between Scartho and Reynolds finishing a much closer 4-2 to Scartho seeing them come from behind to clench the victory.

The two in form teams met in the final and the game did not disappoint. Both sides started strongly with Scartho scoring the first try of the game prompting an immediate reply from Healing to draw the score level. Healing then took the lead to be quickly pulled back and take the game to 2-2 into half time. After changing ends the final half got under way with a number of near misses and turn over balls breaking up play. The break through came as Scartho put a number of quick passes together exposing the smallest of gaps in the strong Healing defence to take the score to 3-2. Healing threw everything they had into the game in the closing minutes but the Scartho defence remained organised and capitalised on a late break to take the final score to 4-2.

Congratulations to both Scartho and Healing A who will progress onto the Level 3 tournament to represent North East Lincolnshire on Wednesday 15th July at Hymers College, Hull.
