KS2 New Age Kurling Competition

On Tuesday 21st April the KS2 New Age Kurling tournament took place at Franklin College. The event was well attended with 15 teams from 6 schools in attendance from Scartho, Eastfield, Laceby Stanford, Thrunscoe, Weelsby and Oasis Academy Nunsthorpe.

New Age Kurling is a form of the original curling game, but adapted so that it can be played indoors on any smooth, flat surface, such as a sports hall, rather than on ice. The game can be played by both able-bodied and disabled people of all ages alike. A game consists of 3 ends (an end consists of 8 stones per team) and the team with the highest number of points after the three ends win.

The teams competed in 4 groups and all teams were competing to finish in the top two of their groups to progress on to the knockout stages. The competition was fierce from the off and coming down to the final games within each group it was still all to play for. The final standings after the group stages saw all three teams from Eastfield, two teams from Scartho and one from Laceby Stanford, Nunsthorpe and Thrunscoe progress respectively.

The first quarter final saw Scartho C edge past Eastfield A with a final score of 2-1 and Thrunscoe C replicated this score against Eastfield B on court 2. Laceby Stanford A fought valiantly against Eastfield C and Scartho A cruised past Nunsthorpe A 3-0 to progress to the semi-finals.

The semi-finals saw two close games between Scartho C and Thrunscoe C on court and Laceby Stanford A and Scartho C on court 1.

On court 1 Scartho took an early one point lead only to be brought equal by Laceby Stanford A in End 2. The game came down to the final end where Scartho managed to land two stones on the target and progress through to the final as 3-1 winners

Events were very similar on court 2 with the game drawn coming into the final end. Scartho C’s final stone landing just on the target to secure them a victory and confirm an all Scartho final.

Teams from all stages of the tournament gathered to watch the final game which saw no points scored in the first end. Scartho C edged to a slim lead in the second end seeing them enter End 3 with a 1-0 lead. However an impressive final two stones from Scartho A saw them clear the target of Scartho Cs stone leaving 3 of their own closest to the middle and emerge as 3-1 winners.

Many thanks to the hard work and enthusiasm from all the teams involved and congratulations to Scartho A on their victory!

Event organiser, Nick Hanson said, ‘The tournament was a huge success with the pupils participating a huge credit to their school. New Age Kurling allows children who otherwise wouldn’t get the opportunity to play with or against each other competing on a level playing field. We are keen for children in North East Lincolnshire to get the chance to play new and non-traditional sports.’ HeH

A special mention to the volunteers from Franklin College who helped support and officiate the event.
