Yr5/6 Sports Hall Athletics Final

The North East Lincolnshire School Sports Partnerships Yr5/6 Sports Hall Athletics final took place on Wednesday 3rd December at The Grimsby Institute of Further Education. The top 8 schools who qualified from across the 4 heats came together to compete for the title with the top 2 teams also qualifying for the Humber School Games where they will be competing against the top schools from North Lincolnshire, East Riding and Hull.

The final consisted of 6 track and 6 field events for both boys and girls with schools being allowed to bring a maximum of 15 boys and 15 girls. Each child could compete in a maximum of 2 track and 2 field events each.  The event was attended by the 1st and 2nd placed schools from last year both Fairfield and Coomb Briggs respectively.

Only 200 points separated the top 8 schools and with 32 points on offer for the winners of each event the day was set to be highly competitive!

The day began with the obstacle relay which saw Edward Heneage victorious in both the boys and girls events. The teams then split off and the boys began their first round of field events while the girls continued to compete on the track. The support for every school was fantastic which resulted in a very loud reception for every athlete that competed! All schools were gracious both in victory and defeat creating a brilliant friendly but competitive atmosphere.

The event paused for a break at the half way stage with everything still to play for. The leader board for the teams seemed to change after every event highlighting the amazing standards being met by every athlete within each team.

Getting back underway after the break and the competition was still as fast and furious as at the start of the day. The boys now began their track events while the girls took to the field. As with all previous events both in the heats and the final the standard from all the athletes was exceptional and they were all a credit to their schools.

In 8th place were St James competing in their first Sports Hall Athletics competition and reaching the final was a great achievement.

Wybers, Great Coates and Western finished 7th, 6th and 5th respectively.

Last year’s runners up Coomb Briggs had another strong show finishing 4th.

A strong Edward Heneage team finished 3rd just 6 points behind last year’s winners Fairfield in 2nd.

Winners Scartho proved that consistency was key finishing 5th or above in all of their individual events and taking the overall title of North East Lincolnshire Sports Hall Athletics Final Champions!
