Skipping has been a playground mainstay for generations and enjoyed by many children growing up. This is none more apparent than at Humberston Cloverfields Primary School where the Skipping Club after school has gained much interest.
The Skipping Club has been a regular hobby for pupils at the school for years, but since last June, two year 11 students from neighbouring Humberston Maths and Computing College have taken over the reigns as coaches. After receiving their level 1 and 2 Sports Leadership awards for coaching, Lauren Appleton (15) and Isabelle Burkitt (16) decided to pursue coaching, in the form of the club. Lauren said “I used to be involved in the club myself when I attended the school and have always enjoyed skipping, so coaching the club has been a great experience.”
The club runs from 3:30 to 4:30, and it is clear the club has been both enjoyable and beneficial to pupils and coaches alike. Isabelle said “I’ve seen much development in the abilities of the pupils since we started which has been great to watch. Personally, I’ve gained friendships and more confidence in my teaching along the way as well.”
There are varying abilities between the pupils, but an unanimous feeling of amusement and enjoyment at the club, like Matthew (10) who attends the club on a regular basis. “ I love coming here every week. I like sports in general so this was another way to keep active” he said.
The pupils have opportunity to try different routines and hone in on their current skills in skipping at the club, which could be on show for all as they are applying for the Grimsby Skipping Festival this year. Recently the club actually raised £74.40 during a skipping event at the school, to buy new ropes and raise money for the British Heart Foundation, which was a great achievement that highlighted the commitment of the club.
It’s a great place for pupils just to keep active and have fun, which is a credit to all involved, and hopefully they’ll be successful in their competitions and events in the future.
