Yr 7 8 9 10 Rugby CVL

After a series of friendlies in March, the North East Lincolnshire School Sports Partnership’s Secondary Rugby Finals took place at Grimsby RUFC on Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th March.

In the year 7 event, schools represented were Tollbar Academy, Ormiston Maritime Academy, Havelock Academy, John Whitgift Academy, Healing Academy, Humberston Academy, Oasis Academy Wintringham and Cleethorpes Academy.

Schools were placed into 2 groups with each team playing 3 matches before progressing into a final between the winners of each group.

In group 1, Tollbar Academy had a 100% record, defeating Ormiston 2-1 in their opening fixture before clicking into gear with some fantastic Rugby, beating Whitgift 11-1 and finally Havelock 5-1. In second place, Ormiston had 3 close fought games, with their sole victory coming in their final group game against Whitgift 3-1.

In group 2, Healing Academy also had a 100% record, defeating Clee Academy 3-0 in their opening game, Humbertson 8-3 and Oasis Academy Wintringham 2-0 in their final fixture. In second place, Humberston’s only defeat was in their opening fixture to Healing, beating Clee Academy 4-2 and Oasis Academy Wintringham 5-3 in their final fixture.

The final was a pulsating affair between Healing and Tollbar. Healing led Tollbar with 15 seconds of the second half left, before Tollbar equalised in the dying seconds to ensure a period of extra time. After 10 minutes of extra time and with both teams looking tired, it was Tollbar who struck the killer blow, flying down the flank to convert the winning try!

Both teams were a credit to their schools, demonstrating fair play and a high standard of Rugby.

In the year 8 event, teams representing Tollbar, Clee Academy, Havelock, Healing and Ormiston took part. Teams were placed into a single group with each team playing four fixtures before progressing into a final.

Tollbar topped the group with a 100% record, scoring 21 and conceding only a single try over their four fixtures. In second place, Clee Academy’s only defeat was to the group winners, Tollbar 1-4 in the opening fixture, before beating Havelock and Healing (both 5-2) and Ormiston 9-2 in their final group game.

Group winners Tollbar and Clee Academy progressed into a final with Clee Academy looking to atone for their defeat in the group stages. Tollbar were out of the blocks quicker scoring the first try, before a superb fightback from Clee turned the tables, taking a 2-1 lead into the second half. Tollbar then played some fantastic dynamic Rugby to score 3 consecutive tries, resulting in a 4-2 victory for Tollbar.

The year 9 and 10 finals took place on Wednesday 18th March.

In the year 9 event, teams representing, Tollbar, John Whitgift Academy, Clee Academy, Healing Academy and Humberston took part. The competition was a 5 team league, with each school playing 4 fixtures before progressing to a final.

At the end of the group stage, it was Tollbar who topped the group, winning all four of their fixtures, scoring 17 and conceding 3 tries. In second place, John Whitgift and Clee Academy had equal records (2-1-1) but as a result of Whitgift scoring more tries in their fixtures, progressed through to the final.

The final was contested between John Whitgift and Tollbar Academy and with the result in the group stage 3-2 to Tollbar, the result was far from a formality. It was Tollbar who started the brighter of the two sides, scoring two quick tries to unsettle a strong and powerful Whitgift side. Tollbar’s combination play was a joy to behold, with three additional tries resulting in 5-0 victory for Tollbar.

In the year 10 event, teams from Tollbar, Healing, Humberston, Clee Academy and Oasis Academy Winrtringham were represented.

It was Tollbar and Clee Academy who finished in the top two positions and progressed into the final with Tollbar again unbeaten after their four fixtures. Humberston finished in third place with Healing and Wintringham in joint 4th.

The final was contested by Tollbar and Clee Academy, with Tollbar’s attacking play and strong running was prominent with Tollbar running out 8-0 winners.

Mike Womersley, event coordinator said, ‘Both the number of schools taking part and the standard of Rugby in North East Lincolnshire continues to grow. There was some fantastic combination play and skill on show across all year groups and the respect and fair play of those taking part was fantastic to see.’
