School Sports Coaching Programme

School Sport Coaching Grant

Background

School Sport Partnerships (SSPs) are responsible for driving the school element of the ‘5 hour offer’, as set out in the Government’s PE & School Sport for Young People (PESSYP) Strategy.  The ‘5 hour offer’ strives to provide each child with the opportunity to access to five hours of high-quality PE and sport a week by 2012. The ‘5 hours’ should be made up of two hours of physical education within the curriculum and a further three hours of sporting activities offered on school sites or in the community.

The additional three hours of sporting activities have now been broken down further; schools and School Sports Partnerships are now tasked with the challenge of providing two hours curriculum time PE and one additional hour on the school site per week, with the remaining two hours being offered elsewhere in the community. More specifically, by 2011, 80% of young people aged 5-16 should be accessing three hours of high quality PE and sport on a school site every week.

How can this be achieved?

How can you ensure that 80% of the pupils at your school are engaging in 3 hours of sporting activity on your school site each week?

  • 2 hours curriculum time
  • After school sports clubs
  • Lunchtime activity
  • Breakfast club activity

What help is available?

In order to help schools provide this additional hour on the school site each week, the SSP has access to a School Sport Coaching Grant. This funding is intended to provide additional, high-quality, coaching on a school site for children with an interest in sport – those that already participate in 3/4 hours of sport each week but would like to do more! It is not for curriculum support nor is it intended for engaging the non-sporty. It offers additional quality coaching from a paid coach to assist young people in developing to the next level of competition or in joining an accreditated sports club.

In North East Lincolnshire, schools may be offered coaching in the following sports:

  • Netball for Key Stages 2 and 3
  • Rugby Union for Key Stages 2 and 3
  • Tennis for Key Stages 2 and 3
  • Kwik Cricket for Key Stage 2
  • Badminton for Key Stages 2 and 3
  • Girls Basketball for Key Stage 3
  • Tri-Golf for Key Stage 2
