Playground to Podium

‘Playground to Podium’ is a new national strategy for the identification, development and support of talented young disabled athletes. The Playground to Podium framework forms a pathway which will take young disabled people from PE, through participation, to high level performance and competition.

The ultimate aim of this pathway is to produce our next Paralympians and elite disabled athletes by providing structured pathways in disability sport from schools to community clubs and onto performance environments. Linking into this framework are the player performance pathways from National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGB’s), providing performance environments and high quality coaching for identified talented participants to enter County, Regional and National squads.

The School Sport Partnership has been tasked with delivering the following elements of the Playground to Podium project:-

  • New community sports clubs offering regular out-of-school-hours coaching opportunities to enhance the sporting skills of those young disabled people wishing to progress further in a sporting environment. Currently there are two clubs in operation, at Oasis Academy Wintringham on Saturday mornings from 10am – 12noon and at Whitgift School on Thursdays from 4.30-6pm. For further information please contact Lucy Johnstone on 01472 323346.
  • Identifying Ability Days to bring together young disabled people to experience a range of high quality coaching environments through which to assess their sporting potential. If your child is identified as having talent they will be invited to attend a County Assessment Centre for a more formal assessment and high quality coaching in specific sports and where ultimately they may be selected to participate in an elite training programme delivered by a NGB.
